Scorchers’ Wafcon qualifiers’preps await coach’s plans

Football Association of  Malawi (FAM) says Scorchers’ preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers will start once Malawi national women’s football team coach Lovemore Fazili submits his plan.

FAM competitions and communications manager Gomezgani Zakazaka said in an interview on Wednesday that the preparations also await the conclusion of the Goshen-FAM  Women’s League.

He said this after The Nation asked when the team will regroup with barely a month before the first round of the qualifiers kick off.

The Scorchers were drawn against Congo in the first round scheduled for between February 17 and 26. Should  they progress to the second round, they will face the winner of the tie between Angola and Zimbabwe between October 20 and 28.

“The coach is yet to come up with a preparatory plan. The Goshen-FAM Women’s League fixtures are also not yet finalised. We hope that everything will be in place in the next two weeks,” Zakazaka said.

Fazili could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Malawi did not join the previous edition of the continental women’s showpiece.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) website www.cafonline.com, 38 will compete for one of the 12 available spots in the final phase, including hosts Morocco.

“The reigning champions, South Africa, are among the six nations exempted from the first round due to their high ranking among Africa’s top teams in the Fifa rankings. Joining them with exemptions are Zambia, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Cameroon,” the website states.
